I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. What can I expect?

Everyone needs support now and then. Here's what the therapeutic process with me typically looks like, whether I'm working with you, your child, or your whole family: We will work together to create a warm, collaborative, authentic and trusting relationship where you can be free to be fully yourself. We will identify and build on your and your family's strength's, identify problematic patterns and needs under challenging behaviors, and work together to identify new ways of relating and supporting those needs.

What’s the difference between working with you or talking to my best friend or family?

A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Also, since counseling is completely confidential, you won’t have to worry about others finding out the things we discuss.

How and where do sessions take place?

Play therapy sessions typically occur in person in a "special play room" that is full of a wide variety of toys that encourage the full expression of emotions for children using the therapeutic powers of play. With children, I find that regular recurring weekly sessions are the best way to work toward your goals. If you reach out to me I can share my current availability and we can work to find a weekly time that works for your family.

Caregiver coaching and consults and individual adult sessions can take place via telehealth from anywhere within Louisiana. We can meet via telehealth at varying times that work with your schedule, usually weekly or bi-weekly depending on your availability.

How long will it take?

Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.

Can I be involved in my child's play therapy?

Absolutely! I find caregiver involvement to be a crucial factor in children working toward their goals in play therapy. We will meet regularly (at least monthly, though more if you like!). In these caregiver consults I will discuss the themes that have been emerging in your child's sessions and strategies that we have been using as we work toward their goals. These consults are also a time for you to share what you have been experiencing at home and school with your child. We can talk through challenges you may be encountering with your child, and explore what might be underneath some of those challenges so as to provide support for you and your child both in and out of the playroom.
